Holding the reception in Danang does not mean registering the marriage in Danang — understand the jurisdiction so you do not fly back and forth.
The most common misunderstanding among couples marrying away from home is assuming that the place of the ceremony is also the place of the paperwork. In fact, the marriage registration file is submitted to the commune- or ward-level People's Committee where one of the two parties resides — if you both reside elsewhere, holding the reception in Danang gives the local ward no jurisdiction. Complete the documents where you live before the trip, and keep the trip for the wedding alone.
Since 1 July 2025, when the country moved to a two-tier local government, civil registration powers previously held at district level passed to commune-level People's Committees — including marriages with a foreign element, now filed at the commune-level People's Committee where the Vietnamese citizen resides rather than at the district Justice Office as before. There are three ways to file: in person at the one-stop counter, by post, or online via the National Public Service Portal.
On documents: if you register somewhere other than your registered permanent residence, you need the original certificate of marital status — issued within three working days and valid for six months from the date of issue; where verification is required, the commune-level People's Committee of your permanent residence has three working days to respond. If your marital status is already held in the National Population Database and the electronic civil status system, the information is filled in automatically and you do not need to present the certificate. A note specific to Danang: after the merger with Quang Nam, the city has 94 commune-level administrative units with many new ward and commune names — check the current name of the unit before filling in the form.
